After immolation by in-laws, Budgam woman battles for life

Srinagar, Feb 02 (KNS): A 30 year old mother of two is battling for life in city's SMHS hospital after her husband and in laws allegedly set her on fire at their residence Ichgam Budgam on January 27. A large group of relatives and residents of Chattergam Budgam today held protest at the press enclave here demanding stern punishment to the in laws accusing them of trying to kill the woman.
According to the relatives of the woman, Tasleema Daughter of Hyder Dar of Chatt ergam who was married to Gh Mohiuddin Rather of Ichgam, her in laws had allegedly sprinkled petrol on the woman after tying her hands and feet with ropes.
They said Tasleema received serious burn injuries resulting in her going into a coma like condition at the SMHS hospital.
"During the night of 27 January, his husband, sister and mother in law tied her hands and immolated her. Locals took her to Budgam Hospital from where she was referred to the city hospital", said the woman's uncle Muhammad Akbar Rather.
"Maryam, who is my sister's sister in law and Fatima her Mother in law had been teasing her for a long time. On Sunday attacked her in a bid to kill her and today she is in a critical condition at SMHS hospital", said Iqbal the woman's brother, while demanding severe punishment to the accused.
The protestors raised slogans demanding stern punishment to the guilty. They staged a sit in for two hours at the press enclave here
Pertinently, the case gains significance in view of strong sentiment of anger over crimes against women in the society in the aftermath of the Delhi Gang rape incident.
Meanwhile, police has filed an FIR in the case under No 18 of 2013 at the Budgam Police Station under section 307 and 498 of the RPC.
"The accused, husband of the victim is in police custody and further investigations are going on", said a police official.
