| Land grabbers with political links rule the roost | | A mole in Sidhra Golf Course | | Early Times Report jammu, Feb 2: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has failed to remove the encroachment around the Sidhra Golf course, where some people have illegally occupied Government land. The encroachment has adversely affected the beauty of the golf course which has the distinction of being one of the finest courses in plains of North India. Half hearted attempts by the Government to clear the encroachments have led to clashes. The concerned have sought stern action against the encroachers. Sidhra Golf Course, is under construction near the banks of river Tawi in Sidhra area in outskirts of Jammu city. On one side, golf course touches the feet of famous Bahu Fort whereas it has a scenic view of Mubarak Mandi heritage complex and Hari Niwas palace on the other side. Even before the land was earmarked for the golf course, some encroachers owing allegiance to different political parties had constructed temporary structures on the site. The Government machinery somehow managed to get major chunk of area cleared from land grabbers but still nomadic population is sitting on the Government land in temporary huts. Whenever anybody tried to clear the encroachment, they clash with them and attract media and peoples attention. Sources in administration told Early Times that these people are working at the behest of few politicians and nobody dares to take strict measures against them. "These people aren't from one particular community but enjoy patronage of politicians who exercise their influence on people who matter", sources added. They said that apart from surroundings of Sidhra golf course, these land grabbers have occupied major chunk of land on the banks of river Tawi in Sidhra and many other areas. The recent clashes of people with police in Sidhra area made it clear that these people enjoy strong backing of politicians. With Assembly elections just less than two years away, no political party and even Government can afford to annoy the encroachers. As Sidhra falls under Nagrota Assembly segment from where NC provincial president Devender Singh Rana has announced to contest the 2014 Assembly elections against State president of BJP Jugal Kishore Sharma, it has already become a hot spot. The Government cannot take the risk of annoying them at this crucial juncture. |
