Early Times REport

Srinagar, Feb 2: After above normal night temperature, the day also started with a sunshine in the Kashmir valley, where fresh snowfall is expected from tomorrow till February 7 as a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is approaching the region. There was a considerable improvement in the minimum temperature in the Kashmir valley, where sunshine greeted the people as they woke up this morning. However, the respite from the cold during the Chalai-Kalan, will not last long as the Met department has issued a forecast of fresh snowfall tomorrow. A WD is approaching over Jammu and Kashmir and is likely to affect the region and adjoining areas from February 5 and 6 due to which moderate to heavy snowfall would occur over hills and rains in plains. Because of moisture incursion from Arabian Sea, some places along Pirpanjal range, including the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, and plains of Jammu are likely to receive heavy to very heavy snowfall or rainfall during these days. He said due to cloudy weather the night temperature will rise two to three degrees and maximum temperature may fall by six to seven notches. Gulmarg, the world famous ski resort in north Kashmir, about 55 km from here, was coldest in the Kashmir valley though the minimum was more than eight notches warmer than yesterday. Met spokesman said it was minus 2 degrees against yesterday's minimum temperature of minus 10.6 degrees, which was two degree below normal. Interestingly, Kupwara with minus 0.6 degree was more colder than Pahalgam, base camp of Holy Amarnath cave shrine, where the annual yatra will start in June this year. The minimum temperature at Pahalgam was 0.2 degree, more than seven degree above normal while at Kupwara it was minus 0.6 degree, about two degree above normal, spokesman said adding it was one degree warmer than yesterday. The summer capital, Srinagar, also witnessed a considerable improvement by five degrees in the night temperature against yesterdays minus 1.4 degrees it was 3.1 degrees. However, there was slight drop in the minimum temperature in Ladakh region. Against minus 7 degrees it was minus 7.6 degrees at Leh while at Kargil, a border town of Kargil it was minus 9.4 degree against yesterday's minus 8 degree.
