Srinagar, Feb 8 : Cold wave conditions intensified as minimum temperature drops further in the Kashmir valley, where the sun was out though icy cold winds continued. Ladakh region continued to shiver as the minimum temperature was between minus 15 to minus 30 degree. A Met department spokesperson today said the weather will remain dry with night temperature dipping further while the maximum will be above normal during the next 24 hours. There would be no major change in the weather during subsequent two days, he said. In the summer capital of the Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, the minimum dropped further, resulting in more cold. Met spokesman said against yesterday's minus 2.2 degrees, it was minus 2.7 degrees, about two degrees below normal. However, Gulmarg, the famed ski resort where ' Harmukh' ski lift was inaugurated yesterday, was coldest in the Kashmir valley after the minimum was recorded minus 14 degree, six notches below normal. Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir, where the annual Amarnath pilgrimage will start from June this year, was second coldest with minus 8.2 degrees minimum temperature. Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway also witnessed drop in the temperature from minus 1.9 degrees yesterday to minus 3.6 degrees while at Kokernag it was minus 2.7 degrees and Kupwara minus 2.4 degrees, Met spokesman said. There was still no let up in the severe cold in Ladakh region, which remained cut-off by road since December last year after the highway connection with region and the rest of the state closed due to snowfall. At Leh the minimum temp was minus 17.6 degree and at Kargil, a border town it was minus 15 degree. However, in the upper reaches besides Drass, the worlds second coldest place after Siberia it was between minus 16 degrees to minus 30 degrees, including in the areas near the Line of Control, where troops remained deployed to foil any infiltration attempt from across the border. |
