| PMG starts European type services in Kashmir | | | Javaid Naikoo
SRINAGAR, Feb 8 : With an aim to remind people of the postal services that they were using before the technological advancement are still very much effective and economical, the Post Master General (PMG) today created a history by walking along with his postman and other officials of the department in Lal Chowk and Residency Road areas here to deliver letters by hand among the people in general. With this initiative by the Postal Department, the J&K today became the first state in the country to organize the 'Post Master General (PMG) Walk'. According to the Post Master General, Samuel John, who has taken the initiative while talking about the walk said that it is a new initiative for connecting people of Kashmir with the department as they used to be in the past and in this regard concerned post office officials will be meeting locals on roads, in offices and at other places accordingly. During his walk along with a local postman and other officers of the department, the team interacted with customers with an initiative to have on spot feedback and notice the services people crave from this very department. He added that the department is going to continue this type of walk in Jammu and Ladakh and later may be the same type of walk will be followed by the concerned heads across India. During the walk, Samuel John said that he has given the project of reviving the old buildings to INTACH Kashmir chapter who will be looking after them now onwards. Believing in doing something different, earlier the said department started a floating type post office in Dal lake Srinagar, which is a unique of its kind in the world. According to PMG, earlier the department had a boat on rent which sank but now a new boat has been acquired and by this summer it will be operational again, besides the department is very soon also contacting the Kashmir University to train its staff for enabling them to provide people in general, the most appropriate services of this department. Later PMG announced that a Post Office festival will be organized at the famous skiing resort of Gulmarg next month again only with an intention to revive the traditional, yet on modern lines postal system of the state. |
