Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 21: NC MP, GN Rattan Puri in a letter to the Prime Minister, condemning hanging of Afzal Guru, had said that he feels sorry for the Chief Minister who finds no option but to express his helplessness in securing the basic human Rights of his people and in asserting his own authority. Rattanpuri, who in the past had got involved in controversy with the NC leadership, had deliberately tried to hide facts in an attempt to bring himself as the custodian of sensitivity of Kashmiri people. Any person with even a pedestrian knowledge of law, would see that since the crime taken place in Delhi the J&K Government was in no way in any picture with regard to the registration of the case of terrorism and subsequent question leading to trial and conviction. It's for this reason, Omar had made statement, a day after Guru was hanged, that he didn't have to sign the death warrant, as in case of Maqbool Bhat, since the incident had not happened in J&K. The other point raised by Rattan Puri, and also pointed by Omar, is about Supreme Court's observation that his hanging would satisfy the national consciousness. The point here is that Afzal Guru was the only surviving terrorists, involved in planning and execution of attack on Parliament. The attack on Parliament was indeed on the Indian consciousness of living in a democracy. It's this consciousness that seperates this nation from either neighbouring Pakistan or any other Banana republic. It's this consciousness of being part of a democratic set up which brings pride and also dreams that propel this nation. The hanging did satisfy the Indian consciousness in a manner the collective consciousness of Kashmir was hurt when first Sheikh Abdullah was jailed and then elections were rigged. This point Rattanpuri is deliberately missing. Rattanpuri for his own political survival, which itself is questionable, is trying to stoke up flames which have been cooled down at his own and at the peril of NC. |
