Hartal politics back in Kashmir, separatists devoid of political wisdom
2/22/2013 12:37:59 AM

Mustansir
srinagar, Feb 21: Even though the hard-line separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani after the end of the 2010 unrest recognized the fact that the continuous shutdown is only doing harm to the common people and the tactics need to be revisited, the leader is back with the same formula. The response of the separatist leaders to the Guru hanging with the same old 'hartal formula' has proved that the separatist leaders are devoid of any political wisdom and vision. Also the separatist leaders have failed to recognize the fact that calling the people for repeated shutdowns is adversely affecting the work culture and mindset of the young generation.
As the week long curfew imposed by the authorities after the hanging of Guru came to an end, Geelani issued the call for protests and a few days later came up with a calendar repeating 2010 and 2008 rhetoric. Though the hard-line leader repeatedly criticizes the Government for imposing the curfew every now and then arguing that such restrictions badly effect the normal lives of the people, however, the leader on the other often claims that the shutdowns don't have a similar effect on the life of people even though the two carry the same force.
During the unrest of 2010, the United Jihad Council chief Syed Salah-u-Din questioned the method of frequent shutdowns. In a statement to a news agency, he had said, "This movement is not for two or four days, it will take time... so continuous strikes are not a good option. The movement should continue and educational institutions and the economy should run simultaneously. There should be a strategy and direction to the movement so that people don't suffer and the ongoing movement against India continues." The Jamat-e-Islami also spoke in similar terms about the frequent strikes. In 2011, the hard-line separatist leader himself admitted that 2010 was a failure on their part. However, when the Guru hanging threw a new challenge before separatists, the leaders failed to come up with any new tactic and are seemingly going back to the old rhetoric. Clearly the leaders are devoid of any 'imaginative character' and lack the ability to think differently. Had it not been so then definitely they would have come up with a novel method of agitation this time that would have promised to inflict less harm to the people and at the same time assuring them of a possible outcome on their side.
Meanwhile, partial effect of the strike was observed as the shops, business establishments and petrol pumps remained closed, while public transport remained off the roads.
However, private vehicles could be seen plying on the roads. It merits a mention here that the hard-line separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who is under house arrest in Delhi, had issued a protest calendar on Monday, saying complete "civil curfew" will be observed on Wednesday and Thursday, while a shutdown will be observed after Friday prayers followed by peaceful protests.
