BJP in a fix over support to Dodha
To choose between NC and KPs
2/22/2013 12:38:59 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 21: Shiben Kishan Dodha, Independent candidate, contesting Legislative Council elections on the seats allotted to Kashmir region, has put BJP in a quandary. It has decided to boycott the elections but to save its pro-Hindu image; the party seems under pressure to support Dodha.
On the one hand, local BJP leadership don't want to take confrontation with ruling National Conference on the issue of Legislative Council elections but on the other hand party has to protect its image. The BJP had announced to boycott the Legislative Council elections a day before last date of filing nomination papers but the way some groups of Kashmiri Pandits have effectively launched campaign for Dodha, the BJP has been virtually landed in the piquant situation. The KP groups are projecting Dodha as candidate of the entire community and the BJP, which is championing the cause of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, could not afford to maintain a distance from electioneering.
Notwithstanding their aggressive posture against National Conference, it is an "open secret" that all influential local BJP leaders want to facilitate victory of National Conference candidates during their proximity with ruling party.
Not only the rebels, who have been expelled from the BJP, do not want to confrontation with ruling party, even loyalist leaders, who were given clean chit in the "Cash for Vote" episode, are also hand in glove with National Conference but the new development has created a difficult situation for them. Insiders said that local BJP leaders were trying to ensure smooth sailing of NC candidates from two seats of Kashmir valley so they will try to convince the high command to allow them to boycott the elections. But, the well calculated campaign launched by KP groups has put the party in difficult situation.
Insiders said that today was the last date of withdrawing nomination papers and decision of the Dodha to continue in fray has added woes of local BJP leaders. "A senior BJP leader, who is known for his proximity with National Conference has been working overtime to ensure that party would stick to its early stand of boycotting the elections so that National Conference candidates win the elections without any difficulty", insiders said, "had local BJP leaders were aware that a KP would file nomination papers, party would have been field its own candidate to ensure victory of NC candidate". "Now the situation has taken dramatic turn and party is facing difficulty to take a stand", insiders said.
They added that KP groups have decided to approach leadership of RSS to force the BJP to support their candidate. "In case BJP would not support our candidate, we will expose that this party is working as a B team of NC in J&K", a KP leader said on the condition of anonymity.
