| Needed: A comprehensive strategy to keep extremist outfits off Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 24: The withdrawal of the US-led NATO forces from Afghanistan from 2014 and the alienation in Kashmir is likely to create a wide space for the revival of the militant activities in valley. Deeper alienation of masses particularly in the aftermath of Parliament attack convict M Afzal Guru's execution and his subsequent burial in Tihar jail has certainly created a wide space for the militant outfits who are concluding their operations in Afghanistan as the US-led NATO forces plan their withdrawal by 2014. The militant outfits have already sent out messages, vowing to make Kashmir as their next battle field. In Taliban's recent declaration, Maulana Asmatullah Muawiya, the Punjabi Taliban's head, said that the hanging of Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru has intensified passion for jihad among Muslim youth and India will have to pay the price for this "unwise" decision. Muawiya was once a top Jaish-e-Mohammad militant and known for his activities inside Kashmir. Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, alias Latram, a resident of Srinagar and one of three militants released by India in 1999 in exchange for passengers of a hijacked Indian Airlines flight, in his recent interviews has said a "reinvigorated" armed struggle in Jammu and Kashmir was the only solution to the Kashmir issue. He has said that his goal is to "liberate Jammu and Kashmir through an armed struggle". He has said that he is planning to revive an "armed struggle" in Jammu and Kashmir while using Pakistan-administered Kashmir as the base for his Al Umar Mujahideen group. Jaish-e-Mohammed head Masood Azhar too has said that it plans to step up the "jihad" in Jammu and Kashmir. As the Afghan war nears end, a greater though not relatively novel challenge unfolds itself before the state of India. The challenge cannot be met by only stepping up its cordon on borders and increase its security presence but by making efforts to create a congenial atmosphere for addressing the alienation of Kashmir masses. The healing touch is the need of the hour to save the young Kashmiris from falling into the orbits of extremist outfits.
