early times report
Jammu, Feb 24: Just a day after the news report published in Early Times, the Power Development Department (PDD) seems to have woken from its deep slumber and started regularization of power supply connections, which were earlier running illegally.
Though the senior officials deputed in Division-3 of PDD, here, have started personally inspecting the suspected areas in their respective jurisdictions, yet the officials deputed in other PDD Divisions including 1 and 2 of Jammu have yet to wake up from their deep slumber and act.
Today i.e. Sunday, even being a holiday, the senior officials of PDD Division-3 personally inspected some of the areas mentioned in Early Times report and detected numerous power connections without Temporary Connections or Cluster Meter. The officials also ensured on the spot regularization of at least 300 power supply connections that were existing in the areas including Rajpura Mangotrian, Upper Shiv Nagar, Lower Shiv Nagar and Shakti Nagar.
"Taking cognizance of number of power connections running illegally, the senior PDD officials had a better off the field staff including Linemen, Meter Readers and Junior Engineers and sought to know how such connections were prevailing in their respective jurisdictions. They also sought to know since how old such connections were there," shared eyewitnesses while speaking to Early Times. They further added that "the inspecting PDD team seized the electric wires, heaters as well as bulbs from the spot."
Early Times in its February 23rd edition had published a news report indicating that over 50,000 power supply connections are running illegally here in and around the Municipal limits. It was also mentioned that there was the presence of a large chunk of migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh (UP), Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa settled in slum areas (Jhuggis) in and around the Municipal limits here. That chunk contains at least the population of about 1.75 to 2 lakh. Out of that lot, only few per cent have obtained either Cluster Meters or Temporary Connections, rest almost all are allegedly greasing the palms of PDD officials deputed in field areas and enjoying power supply almost on "negligible rates".
