| NMC demands exemption of income tax on DA | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 24: President of the National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) Subash Shastri today demanded exemption of Dearness Allowance from the ambit of income tax as this is linked with price index. Addressing an impressive rally of NMC workers here, Shastri said that the price escalation is directly linked with the Dearness Allowance of the salaried class and pensioners but it was strange that the income tax is also imposed on the increase of the salaries because of DA. This means that the step taken to neutralize the effects of the inflation gets nullified, he added. Hence there is no justification of imposing income tax on the Dearness Allowance, he said. Shastri urged upon the Union Finance Minister to reconsider the practice about imposition of income tax on the Dearness Allowance and raise the income tax exemption limit from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh for both Central and State Government employees and pensioners and make announcement in this regard when the Union budget for 2013-14 will be presented in parliament on 28th February. Shastri said that provision with regard to 20% interim relief to the central/state Governments employees and pensioners, merger of 50% of DA into basic pay/pension and enhancement of monthly wages of daily wagers to ten thousand should also be made simultaneously in the Budget. Shastri further said that since salaried class constitutes a large and important segment of voters as such setting up of 7th pay commission and others demands will be major issues in the next Lok Sabha election. |
