| Construction of Kishanganga project shortly | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 24: After having won the case against Pakistan, which had raised objections to the construction of the Kishanganga power project on the plea that it violated the Indus Water Treaty, the Government has decided to start construction of the project shortly. Official sources said that Pakistan had been raising one objection or the other whenever India has been starting building hydel power project in Jammu and Kashmir and right from Bhaglihar to Dhul Hasti to Uri Islamabad has lost the case whenever it sought international intervention and mediation. And in a bid to create one problem or the other for India in Jammu and Kashmir Pakistan had approached the court of International Court of Arbitration for mediation in India's plan to build Kishanganga power project. Sources said that the Government will shortly start construction on Rs.3,642.04 crore Kishanganga hydropower project after International Court of Arbitration at The Hague having ruled in favour of India. Pakistan had questioned the "legality of the construction and operation of an Indian hydro-electric project" under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. India had said that building the dam was within its rights. The treaty regulates the use of Indus river waters by India and Pakistan. Pakistan's argument was that the Indian project would affect the Neelum-Jhelum project constructed by Pakistan downstream of the Kishanganga project. Sources explained that the project comprises 3 units of 110 megawatts (MW) each. The project located in Baramullah in Jammu and Kashmir involves the diversion of the Kishanganga river, a tributary of the Jhelum into an underground powerhouse near Bandipur. They said that work would begin as soon as weather conditions in Kashmir improved. |
