Around 3 lac kanals of forest land encroached in JK

srinagar, Mar 5: Even as the Forest Ministry strives hard to protect the forests, encroachment of forest land and smuggling continue unabated.
Official figures available with the Early Time Plus suggest that in respect of Jammu region during the last three years 5443 cases of forest damages were registered under Forest Act, out of which 3366 have been disposed off. In Kashmir Region 1241 cases have been registered in concerned police stations against 3890 culprits during the last three years. As many as 1057 cases stand challaned in courts against 3771 offenders. Further 93 dossiers have been framed and submitted to District Magistrates for detention of damage doers under Public Safety Act and 69 warrants have been issued, detaining 49 culprits.
Under Section 48(A) of Jammu and Kashmir Forest Act, Forest officers as "Estate Officers" have evicted 987.01 ha (in Kashmir region) and 127.105 ha (in Jammu region) of forest land from the encroachers and efforts are on for eviction of the balance area under encroachment. Besides, 13 attempts of fresh encroachments have been foiled and an area of 2474 kanals has been saved from the clutches of encroachers in Jammu region.
The official figures revealing the district-wise details of area of forest land under the illegal encroachment in hectares is given as under.
However, the details about the encroachers of forest land are not provided in the documents. It is widely perceived that the vital details have been deliberately withheld to shield the high profile politicians.
