ET Plus Report
Jammu, Mar 5: The private B.Ed colleges affiliated to University of Jammu (JU) have exposed the lackadaisical approach of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar before the Minister for Higher Education Mohammed Akbar Lone, as they complained before the latter against former in a meeting held last evening, sources disclosed.
Sources said following the complaint, the Minister directed the Vice Chancellor to immediately act and redress the grievances of the B.Ed colleges. Initially, the Vice Chancellor expressed inability to start the process afresh and cited various compulsions but later agreed to find a middle path. Sources added that Lone straight away asked the Vice Chancellor to justify his position and work seriously instead of just make lame excuses. Owing to volley of questions from the Minister regarding functioning of University, the Vice Chancellor got stunned and could not even speak for a while, they further said.
The main contention of the B.Ed colleges was vacant seats, which is around nine thousand in number. Though, University held the online admission counseling last year but still a big number of seats remained unfilled. Reliable sources divulged that owners of B.Ed colleges approached Vice Chancellor on number of occasions to have fresh round of admission counseling but he declined citing various reasons. Insensitivity on the part of University administration compelled the administrators of private B.Ed colleges.
During the meeting with Lone, four-member delegation from the side of B.Ed colleges was also present. They included S. Harbans Singh, R S Chib, Zulfikar Ali and Ijaz Jan. When contacted, S Harbans Singh confirmed that they along with the Vice Chancellor had meeting with the Higher Education Minister.
He said, "We expressed concern over the indifferent attitude of the University towards the problems of B.Ed colleges. Minister took the matter seriously and asked for fresh admission counseling but at this stage, when half of the session is over, we will not push University for the same. Let, the Vice Chancellor himself initiate steps in this regard."
Whereas, the Vice Chancellor says that the process of fresh counseling would only be initiated by the office of CDC and same would have to be confirmed by the University Council, the supreme decision making body of the University.
Meanwhile, the race has started among the senior professors of the University to grab the post of Director, Colleges Development Council (CDC). Pertinently, Prof Deshbandhu Gupta, who was on the chair, has proceeded on leave following health reasons. Prof Gupta during his 15 month tenure on the post took several bold initiatives to streamline the working of private colleges affiliated to the University.
According to reliable sources, Registrar Prof Naresh Padha was trying hard to push the name of Prof Kuldeep Sharma for the post of Director CDC. Registrar had even suggested the Vice Chancellor to immediately start fresh round of counseling so as to appease the Minister and B.Ed lobby. There are several other professors also who are trying best to get this post, sources disclosed.
