No curfew in Kashmir, streets flooded with people
3/9/2013 10:39:09 PM
ET Plus Report

Srinagar, Mar 9 (UNI) Streets were flooded with people as there was no curfew in any part of the Kashmir valley, where life remained crippled due to strike and restrictions for five days.
Indefinite curfew, was imposed on March 5 in major parts of the summer capital Srinagar, and some other major towns in the Kashmir, following the death of a youth allegedly in Army firing at Baramulla
However, it was extended to almost entire valley yesterday following call for protests after Friday prayers by the Mutahidda Majlis-e-Mashawrat (MMM), an alliance of different separatist organisations demanding return of the bodies of Parliament Attack convict Afzal Guru, who was hanged on February 9 in Delhis Tihar jail and founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Mohammad Maqbool Bhat hanged in 1982. Both were buried in Tihar jail complex.
Though no official announcement was made on electronic media about the lifting of curfew, security forces and state police personnel deployed were withdrawn last night.
However, the authorities said restrictions would be imposed again in case there is any law and order problem in any part of the valley.
The district administration has been authorised to impose restriction as and when necessary.
People rushed out of their homes after they saw no security force personnel around on the streets.
Traffic police personnel had yet another busy day trying to regulate traffic on streets, which were closed by security forces with barbed wire to impose restrictions.
People in the downtown were seen purchasing essentials this morning after they used pulses and dried vegetables, stored for winter months.
Trouble started in the Kashmir valley on March 5 after an Army patrol party opened fire, killing a youth and injuring another, at Baramulla when people were demonstrating against the death of a Kashmiri student at Hyderabad under suspicious circumstances.
Though authorities said Mudasir Kamran hanged himself, his family members and separatists alleged that he was murdered after he participated in the demonstrations held at Hyderabad against the hanging of Guru .
