| Rail services badly hit in Kashmir, deptt loses Crores | | | Iqbal Mir SRINAGAR, Mar 9: In the ongoing Hartals and unrest in the Kashmir valley the railway services are badly hit as the officials say that it has cost an amount of over Rs 2 Crores to the department since the execution of Mohammad Afzal Guru on Feb 9. The train services in Kashmir were suspended due to the security concern on February 9. Partial train service from Qazigund to Budgam in central Kashmir was resumed on February 18 and the train service between Baramulla to Qazigund was fully restored on February 25. Since the execution of Guru, railway services have remained closed for at least 23 days starting from Feb 9 to March 9. The officials say almost 70,000 to 80,000 passengers travel from one station to other everyday and the railway earns an amount of Rs 1 million per day. They say railways have witnessed a loss of over Rs 2 crores in the ongoing turmoil. "The train operation is being suspended due to the fear of damages to the Railway property," a Railway official said. In 2010, the train services in Kashmir had to be halted for five months due to security reasons and damage to the rail property in various parts of the Valley by protesters. On 25th of February the train services were resumed fully but, soon after the death of Kashmiri Student in Hyderabad, protesters attacked the train at many places forcing the authorities to shut down its services from 2nd March. Railway officials said that it suspended its service as it passes through many volatile areas of the valley and keeping in view the damage it suffered during 2010 unrest. |
