| 'Health Services in ill health' | | Shortage of staff defy tall claims | | Avinash Azad JAMMU, Mar 9: While the health department is patting its back for improvement of health infrastructure across the state, the ground realities are proving all claims hallow. The acute dearth of staff nurses, paramedics and doctors in various health institutions substantiate the facts. Sources told Early Times that there was shortage of around 820 staff nurses in various health institutions across the state, which was one of the reasons, behind increasing incidents of scuffle between staff and patients. "Owing to acute shortage of man power, particularly staff nurses, the patients feel ignored by nurses and many times it amounts to scuffle between patients and staff nurses in various government institutions" a nurse said. Sources revealed that at Shri Maharaja Government Hospital (SMGS) Shalamar against the sanctioned posts of 320 staff nurses in hospital, presently there were only 133 nurses managing all chores in various wards of hospitals. "Recently, 30 new nurses have joined the hospital, but they are also being shifted to Super Specialty Hospital" they said and added that the dearth of staff nurses has increased the workload manifolds. They further revealed that a single staff nurse has to look after around 70-80 patients. "Sometimes it becomes impossible to do all chores in a ward. There is also acute shortage of Nursing Orderlies in the hospital, which also compounded the problem" they said and added that at SMGS hospital, presently there was one nursing orderly for four wards. Preferring secrecy a nurses said that after the introduction of new recruitment policy, the chances of desirable candidates to join the nurse job have also reduced. "The government will give Rs. 4000 for first two years to a newly recruited nurse but at private hospitals a nurse is getting Rs. 7000 per month. Why a nurse will join government hospital instead of private institutions" she added. |
