| Handicapped pensioners of Jammu deprived of their meagre dues since April | | | Arun Singh JAMMU, Aug 2: Indifference of the Social Welfare Department (SWD) Jammu towards disabled lot of the society, which is entitled to monthly pension, can be gauged from the fact that most of the beneficiaries have not received their pension for the last four months putting them into receiving end. Sources told Early Times that hundreds of handicapped pensioners have not received their monthly pension of Rs 400 since the month of April. There are approximately 5000 pensioners under handicapped category in Jammu district but for the last few months many of them have not got pensions impelling them to run from pillar to post. "I have been visiting bank to enquire about my pension for last many months but every time I am told that they have not received amount for pension from SWD," said a handicapped person confined to a wheel chair, preferring anonymity. "Last year I met with an accident at my work place that left me disabled; since then I am confined to wheel chair," he said adding that he sustained on the meagre pension alone. Sources said that centre government has been providing huge funds for disbursement of the pensions but due to callous attitude of SWD, the pensions are not being paid timely to the beneficiaries. However, SWD put all blame on the Banks for delay in disbursement of pension. "These banks are responsible for the delay in giving pension in favour of beneficiaries as they consider disbursement of pension time consuming job that is why they make invoices once in three or four month as per their convenience" a SWD official said. They further said that disbursement of pensions have been influenced by politicians as they force the officials for timely disposal of pensions cases in their respective areas eyeing political gains. |
