‘Jammu has suffered more than Kashmir due to terrorism’

JAMMU, Aug 2: Jammu region has suffered maximum damage during the over two decade long turmoil in the State and as per a statistical data the region has faced highest number of massacres during ten year period from 1996 to 2006.
These facts were revealed by the representatives of terrorist affected people from the region to the Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs during its meeting at New Delhi. While presenting a statistical data to the Committee the representatives of terrorism affected people from the region told the Committee members that out of 39 massacres which took place in the state from 1996 to 2006 nine massacres have taken place in Kashmir valley while the 30 massacres had taken place in the hilly belt of Jammu region comprising of eight districts of the region.
In these massacres 591 people were killed in the state. While 403 among them was from Jammu region while 188 were from Kashmir valley, the committee was informed by the delegation of terrorism affected people after presenting the statistical data.
While apprising the Committee about the problems of the terrorism affected people of the region, the Committee was informed that all the compensation and aid from Union Government for terrorism affected people went to Kashmir valley while Jammu region was totally neglected. It was told that out of 51,81,863 population of Jammu region comprising of 10 districts as per the census of 2001, 35,05,794 was the population of eight districts of the region which are affected by terrorism.
Among this population 12,000 families were totally affected by terrorist violence in the region and they were forced to take shelter in the towns or Jammu city but the Government till date has failed to pay any compensation to them, the Committee was informed. The people of this hilly belt who were dependent on grazing of their cattle, sheep and goats and working as laborers with various agencies extracting forest produce used for medicines etc lost their livelihood after the militants took refuge in juggles and attacked the people who visited their to graze their cattle. They even snatched their sheep and goats killed them and threatened of serious consequences. This way the people were deprived of their livelihood also, the Committee was informed.
The Committee was also told that the terrorism affected people from the region pass miserable days as they have lost all avenues of their livelihood. But the State Government has failed to look into their problems and compensate them accordingly.
