SRINAGAR, Aug 2: Continuing with its action against militants near Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir's border district of Kupwara, Army foiled yet another infiltration bid by the militants and killed one militant while as the second militant got injured in the incident that took place in the Tangdhar sector near the LoC.
Over the past five days 11 militants have been killed in different encounters in the Kupwara district. While six militants were killed in encounters with the security forces near the LoC, five others were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Hafrada forests of Handwara area.
A defence spokesman said that a militant was killed during the operations that were carried during the intervening night of August 1 and 2. The spokesman said that based on inputs regarding movement of militants in the Tangdhar area near LoC troops deployed there detected movement of two militants on this side of LoC in the wee hours of July 31.
"The troops cordoned the area. Heavy fog with intermittent rains delayed the operations throughout the day. By night the two militants who were figured out by the troops fired upon them. In the retaliatory fire one militant was eliminated while as his accomplice was seriously injured in the incident," said the defence spokesman.
The body of the killed militant has been recovered while as searches are going on in the sector to trace out the militant who has been injured in the security forces action. One AK 47 rifle, ammunition and war like stories were recovered by the security forces during the search operations.
It would be in place to mention here that five Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed during a three-day long encounter with security forces in the Hafrada forest in Handwara area of Kupwara district. Army's Kilo Force had launched the operation in Hafrada forests in the frontier district on July 29 after receiving inputs that some militants are hiding there in the forests.
Five AK-47 rifles and other war-like stores were recovered from the encounter site. Some Army soldiers were also injured in the operation. The group of heavily armed militants was part of an infiltration group which has managed to reach the area while crossing the border from across LoC.
Four infiltrating militants were killed in Macchil Sector on Tuesday, while as a militant was shot dead and two others were injured in Keran sector of Kupwara district on Monday. Keran and Tangdhar sectors of Kupwara district are in news quite often for the infiltration bids carried out by militants from across the border.
Over the past one week or so security forces have been engaged with the militants and they foiled three infiltration bids carried out by militants from across the border. While six militants were killed while trying to infiltrate five others were killed in an encounter in the Hafrada forests in Handwara area. Militants from across the border usually try to infiltrate to this side as the summer season sets in and snow starts melting on the peaks and high mountain ranges.
