Cloud burst damages property worth crores in Kargil

Kargil, Aug 2 : The cloud burst which hit kargil district of Ladakh division Thursday night left houses and public property worth crores damaged, resulting in blockade of all the roads leading to Kargil,electricity failure and scarcity of drinking water in the area. Besides, heavy mud brought in by heavy downpour after the cloud burst has restricted the people inside their households. According to the details received from the area, the cloud burst hit areas of Kargil main town, TiTichumik, Pashkun, chanigund, Hunderman and Baroo areas. The details reveal that unexpected cloud burst damaged two houses in TiTichumik and Pashkun areas though no loss of life has been reported from any area so far, however it up rooted all the water supply schemes, electricity poles, destroyed all the bridges which connect Kargil with other parts of the division and changed the course of water channels towards inhabitations.
Many locals of the area while talking to Early Times said that all the major roads which include Kargil - Srinagar raod,Kargil- chikpan,Kargil -Sankoo and Kargil municipal area are blocked due to heavy mud and rocks accumulated on the roads. Locals of the area also said that after cloud burst scarcity of drinking water, destruction of electricity supply have added to worries of the residents who have been forced to stay indoors in dark.
"It was like a dooms day for us and for a moment we thought that everything will come to an end within few minutes soon after this cloud burst in the area "said one local of main town Kargil, Gulzar Ali According to official details high alert has been declared in Kargil area and rescue teams have rushed towards the area after heavy showers coupled with cloud bursts brought flash floods and accumulation of mud in the area.
Official sources said that around 2 feet of mud was reported at main town Kargil, while as in Titikchumik 5-6 feet of mud accumulated on roads and in Hunderman area of Kargil arround 7-8 feet of mud accumulated on the roads leading to blockade of these roads. Police sources added that heavy land slide triggered by rains lead to the closure of Kargil- Leh National Highway at Pushkum area as the road was washed away by the heavy rains and despite all the odds Kargil police succeeded in rescuing nine persons while as one injured person was hospitalized. Locals of the area while praising the efforts of administration in rescue operation said that deputy commissioner Fida Hussain along with other highly placed officials of the area were monitoring the rescue operations throughout the night and have managed to some extent to provide relief to the people.However according to the official statements, advisor to the chief Minister, Kamar Ali Aakhoon today visited the damaged areas and ordered immediate restoration of basic necessities of life in the area, besides he has ordered the officials to take stock of damage to public and private property in the areas affected by cloud burst.
