| Need to have modern gadgets, equipments, proper planning in constructions | | 'Fire fighting' Govt way: train the employees | | ET Report JAMMU, Aug 2: The incident of fire that engulfed a building in the civil secretariat complex in Srinagar last month has made the NC led coalition Government 'wiser'. The fire destroyed entire official records besides razing the building and other assets to ground. The damage estimated has been colossal as the fire could not be controlled in time which could have minimized the losses. As one of the combative measures, what has now dawned upon the Government to 'train' the employees of civil secretariat in fire fighting, a step which it thinks would prove helpful in the event of such incidents and accidents. Sources said that a formal programme for imparting training to employees has already begun with Fire Control Department officials having taken charge of the 'job' to tell do's and don'ts in the event of fire breaking out in any official complex. The training is being imparted as a proper class room programme encompassing lectures by experts besides presentations on use of equipments etc . While the training is being imparted in a phased manner, with the 'trainers' and experts choosing each department separately , the employees are also learnt to be attending keenly. Whether this training would prove of any use or not is something that can not be determined at present but there is criticism well within from the trainers themselves ,sources say adding that their apprehensions of making employees aware about certain basic things may not yield any substantive results as the training doesn't match with what the buildings are equipped with. The point in reference is the lack of modern fire fighting equipments and gadgetry which even the main building of the Secretariat doesn't have at present. Sources said while the Government makes tall claims on possessing such facilities and having fire tenders well within the complex, the recent incident proved neither of the two prevented the intensity of the fire ; The fact remains that even the main complex lacks 'state of art' structure and facilities which ought to be there with respect to modern fire fighting gadgets and equipments instead of stereotype fire extinguishers which prove of no help in the circumstances of fire in alarming proportions as people who are required to push these services run for lives. The need is to put in place such equipments which operate instantly without wasting time , the experts are learnt to be laying thrust on. Sources also say that even though this is a subject which is not under their purview, the experts have also indicated that the construction of structures and small buildings closer to the main building without maintaining the proper distance has also put at risk of huge damages in the event of even small fire incidents breaking out at any corner. Sources said instead of imparting training to employees, it would have been better had the Government paid heed on checking the ill planned structures, no exit points, lack of gadgets etc to prevent such incidents in future. |
