5.4 quake jolts Doda, Kishtwar

Kishtwar, Aug 2: A moderate earthquake of 5.4 magnitude on Richter scale shook many parts of Doda region on Friday morning causing panic among the people who rushed out of their houses.
As per Met department, the epicentre of the earthquake was 14 KM east of Kishtwar (33.32 N; 75.92 E) and took place at 8.02.51 AM at the depth of 40 KM beneath the earth. The shocks of earthquake were felt across Doda region including Bhaderwah, Gandoh, Thatri, Bhunzwah, Banihal, Chatroo, Padder and other major towns of the region.
Due to the fresh earthquake the houses which had suffered cracks in May 1 and May 14 quakes develop further cracks. The earthquake was followed by heavy spells of rains forcing the people to stay out of their houses. Reports said due to the fresh tremor, nearly a dozen houses in Kishtwar and Doda district suffered massive damages.
Meanwhile, 32 year old women identified as Rubina Begum wife of Iqlak Ahmed resident of Sangrabata Kishtwar got injured when she slipped from a ladder while running for the cover at the time of the earthquake. Rubina received serve injuries at her back and was hospitalized in severe pain at District Hospital Kishtwar.
Administrations and police of Doda region have sounded an alert in remote areas to check the losses and to keep any eye on the situation arises due to fresh earthquake.
It is pertinent to mention that over 80 percent resident houses in entire Doda region develops cracks in May 1 and May 14 earthquakes.
As per the government assessment revealed in a joint meeting chaired by Group of Ministers (GoM) and officers of different departments at Doda in Doda district alone 29,000 houses were damaged partially, 10500 severely and 655 fully.
Similarly, in Kishtwar district 18000 houses had been reported partially damaged, 2700 severely and 70 fully. In Ramban district private property worth Rs 15 lakh has been reported as damaged whereas government property worth Rs 1.5 crore has also been reported damaged. In Doda district government property worth over 80 crore has been damaged and in Kishtwar Rs 12-14 crore has been reported as loss to the government property.
In Doda District 494 schools, 12 PHCs and 273 Community Centers have been damaged severely. Similarly in Kishtwar 374 schools have been reported as damaged, beside the earthquake claims the life of two persons and injuries to nearly 90, mostly the school children's. Even though various political parties assured the people about special package from centre, but even after three months, the people of Doda region even not get a single penny as compensation.
To add the worries of earthquake affected victims, administration about fortnight ago issued order for returning of tents given to the earthquake victims, among them many still spend their sleepless nights in open as they have lost their shelter in the natural disaster. As per details over 50 aftershocks were reported in the area since May 1, 2013 earthquake.
