Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Aug 8: Over 300 causal laborers working in Sub Transmission Division Ganderbal are without wages for last three years.
The workers are at the verge of starvation as the authorities of the Power Development have failed to release their salaries till date forcing them to come to streets and resort to road blockade on busy Srinagar -Sonamarg route.
The protesting casual labourers who shouted slogans against the Government were demanding release of the wages on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr falling tomorrow. Terming it a total callousness of the authorities the protestors alleged that it is unfortunate that they have not even been paid the wages on this Eid. They said for last three years they are being only told by concerned authorities that there were no funds with the Department to pay wages to these casual labourers who are at the verge of starvation.
The protestors who also held a rally in Ganderbal town on Wednesday and also protested today later locked the Division of Sub Transmission and took out a procession to District Development Commissioner's Office at Ganderbal.
The DC took up the issue with concerned Chief Engineer who however assured to pay Rs 600 as interim payment to each labourer on the eve of Eid. The Chief Engineer said that due to paucity of funds the Department was not in a position to release the wages in full at this time.
However the protesters did not budge and accused the authorities of diverting the funds to other works instead of releasing the earned wages of the laborers. The protest was led by Mir Ghulam Rasool, patron Employees Federation and its president Abdul Ahad Rather. They took the delegation to DC Ganderbal also demanding immediate release of wages to the hapless casual labourers failing which the Federation will launch the agitation.
The protestors said that the Division is run by casual labourers as it has no regular staff and the authorities till date have also failed to post the regular staff in the Division.
Mir Ghulam Rasool, while lambasting the authorities said that it is unfortunate that Ganderbal being the Assembly segment of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah does not get the proper attention of the authorities and when the casual labourers in this constituency will be deprived of their earned wages what will be the position of people in other parts of the State.
The protestors said that they have to celebrate the sixth Eid without wages and empty hands. This forced them to come to streets and lock the Divisional Office. They also demanded a probe that why the wages were not paid to workers in last three years and where the funds earmarked for the payment of wages to them have gone.
