| Terrorism and Tourism | | | Major Harnam Singh (Retd.) The Jammu and Kashmir state is a sensitive state and a border state but it has got a tremendous potential to attract the tourists. Every year there are certain occasions/Seasons when there is a flow of a national and international tourists and graph of tourists is going up every year. It is pertinent to mention that during the past two decades the state is witnessing a saga of terrorists which is eroding the state economically. Terrorist and Tourist are very much synonymous. But their actions and activities are entirely opposite to each other. Our Govt. and Tourism Dev. Corp. are doing their best to woo the tourists in order to make the state financially stable. Therefore, it should be the moralduty of every state subject to help the Govt. and the concerned agencies to cooperate with them to make optimum use of resources. Recently LC panel for boosting tourism was held under the Chairmanship of Sh. Vijay Bakaya, MLC and reviewed overall functioning of the deptt. Corporations and developments authorities and got feedback about the activities being carried out by them in the state. Many projects which are in hand, every effort is being made by the Development authorities to complete them at the earliest as Makhdoom Sahib Ropeway project is being commissioned on August 15, 2013. Every effort is being made to clear the bottlenecks of other projects by the concerned authorities. Some of the projects under active considerations are heritage buildings, Samba Fort, Jandi Fort, Hira Nagar, BhimGarh Fort Reasi, Chingus Fort, and Jamia Masjid Corridor Srinagar and Mubarak Mandi Jammu. It is also being planned to provide way side amenities to the tourists and commuters on Mughal Road. It will also attract the tourist to travel on Mughal Road and enjoy the natural scenic beauty of the area and also a link between historic scattered places on the Mughal Road. It will provide economic benefits including employment for the local-populace. Crores of Rupees are being spent as also sufficient budget provision is made to provide all possible infrastructures in this regard. Let us view the other side of the picture pertaining to terrorists also. Govt. is having a soft policy towards the surrendered Militants for their rehabilitation, effected families of killed militants provided jobs and their recruitment in the Para military forces, Govt. provides help for the safe return of trained militants willing to surrender. But unlike tourists they are damaging the state economically i.e. by blasting the vital bridges, burning he houses, killing innocent persons and police personnel (becomes liability of Govt.). Due these wrong actions of theirs many times partial curfew is to be imposed which gives a great set back to the business community, transporters suffer heavily which ultimately affects the functioning of the Govt. and suffers heavily in many ways. The state has suffered a lot during the past two decades, during militancy and still we should appreciate the efforts of Dr. Farooq Abdullah, the then chief minister(now union minister)and Omar Abdullah a dynamic and young Chief Minister who have upheld the high status of Jammu and Kashmir State comparing other state of Indian Union. Omar Abdullah has rightly stepped in the shoes of Late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah (His grandfather) and learnt the technique to render relentless services equally to Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh. Therefore, we should extend our whole hearted support in these hard days for building a 'New Jammu and Kashmir' in which we can live peacefully and respectfully. |
