SRINAGAR, Aug 14: Security forces foiled yet another infiltration bid in the Keran area of border district of Kupwara in the wee hours on Wednesday by killing two militants near the Line of Control (LoC). Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of the slain militants by the security forces.
Today's infiltration bid adds to the recent infiltration bids carried out by the militants in the Keran sector in the Kupwara district. Eight militants and one army soldier were killed in different encounters near the Line of Control in the Keran sector between July 29 and August 3. Five more militants were killed in Hafrada forests of Handwara area of the frontier district of Kupwara.
A defence spokesman said that suspicious movement was noticed near the Line of Control adding that the intruders were challenged by the security forces. The defence spokesman said the intruders fired upon the security forces and the fire was returned adding that there was a brief encounter near the Line of Control.
‘In the early hours today at about 3 AM, the troops deployed in the Keran sector of Kupwara district detected some suspicious movement about one and half kilometers towards our own side of Line of Control. The alert troops challenged the intruders, who in turn fired back on the troops, which was strongly retaliated," said the defence spokesman.
The defence spokesman said the prompt action by the vigilant troops resulted in the killing of two militants. He said a thorough search of the area led to the recovery of the bodies of the two slain militants. He added that three AK-47 Rifles, two Pistols, one Pikka Machine Gun and other war like stores were also recovered from the possession of slain militants.
It would be in place to mention here that Keran sector of Kupwara district has been in news over the past three weeks due to the infiltration bids made by militants and their subsequent encounters with the security forces. These brief encounters led to the killing of eight militants and one army soldier. Five more militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Hafrada forests of Handwara area on July 29.
Four infiltrating militants were killed in Machil sector on July 30 while as a militant was shot dead and two others were injured in Keran sector of Kupwara district a day earlier. One militant was killed during the operations carried out by security forces during the intervening night of August 1 and 2. Two more militants and an army soldier were killed in an encounter near the Line of Control in Keran sector on August 3.
Militants from across the border usually try to infiltrate to this side as the summer season sets in and snow starts melting on the peaks and high mountain ranges. Keran and Tangdhar are frequented by militants from across the border to sneak into this side. However on majority of the occasions the vigil maintained by security forces near the Line of Control foil their plans of getting in.
