Prof Chaman ridicules demand of disbanding VDCs
8/14/2013 11:25:39 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Aug 14: Ridiculing the demand of some ruling leaders and also the separatists that the Village Defence Committees (VDCs) be disbanded and the SPOs be removed from the villages in Doda belt, MLA Prof Chaman Lal Gupta alleged that such a demand is loaded with nefarious designs and it must be snubbed by all the right thinking persons, more so, the men in authority. Prof Gupta recalled that the VDCs were organized in nineties when the military was raising their ugly head and the Doda belt was on the target of terrorists after the ethnic cleansing of minorities from the valley. To substantiate his assertions, Prof Gupta pointed out that in the first over twelve years of armed militancy, as many as about sixty massacres took place to scare away the minorities from different areas. He said that it was surprising that the ruling men are keeping their silence over the demands of the dubious characters although earlier in the Assembly as also outside it was acknowledged the role of the VDCs and those of the SPOs in fighting the menace of terrorism and restoring the confidence of the people in the far flung areas. Prof Gupta strongly advocated the need for further strengthening of the VDCs especially in wake of the sad and painful incidents about attacking the minorities in Kishtwar areas and elsewhere. He assailed the authorities for creating martial law like situation in Jammu city and that too on the eve of Independence Day without bothering that what hardships are being caused to the people because of the continued curfew for the sixth day without making any arrangement of supplies including milk, medicines, and those of others essential commodities.
