Srinagar, Aug 25: A senior leader of Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Sunday gave clear indications that they were interested in a dialogue with New Delhi and if invited they won't reject the offer.
Prof Abdul Gani Bhat who is executive council member of the separatist conglomerate expressed these ideas during a party workers meeting in Srinagar. He said with changing global scenario 'alternatives can be accepted.'
"The situation has materially changed. I see resolution of Kashmir issue in changes taking place across the globe. We don't oppose alternatives. Politics is seeking possibilities. Those who say talks had been proved unproductive in past should come with an agenda what according to them is a way out other than talks. If not talks where should we go?" he asked.
He claimed that his party has some roadmaps under active consideration and at an appropriate time those would be made public.
Sources told Early Times that several leaders within the moderate faction of Hurriyat were interested in reviving stalled dialogue process with New Delhi. They said at a time when New Delhi and Islamabad were trying to revive the dialogue process, Government of India has also opened back-door channels to rope in moderate group of separatists for talks.
"In this connection two top officials in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) reportedly established secret contact with some moderate Hurriyat leaders recently. The officials met them in Srinagar to ascertain their views on the talks with New Delhi. They met with separatists separately and secretly," sources said and added the PMO officials left Srinagar with some 'positive signals.'
Sources also revealed that New Delhi is desperate that a few middle rung separatists should come forward and contest Assembly elections scheduled in Jammu and Kashmir next year. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had recently claimed that some of the separatists were preparing for contesting the Assembly election.
Mirwiaz Umar had recently said they will write to Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan for revival of dialogue process and inclusion of Kashmiri leadership in talks Last time leaders of moderate Hurriyat and pro-independence Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik had held talks with then Deputy Prime Minister, Incharge Home, LK Advani during NDA regime in 2003-2004. Later they had also a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and till early 2006, channels of communication were open. However, since then, there has been no direct talks between the Centre and the separatists.
