| Earthquake victims' agony blown off in Kishtwar whirlwind | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 25: Facing sharp criticism for its failure to curb Kishtwar incident that rocked entire country, the state government has put the earthquake relief issue on back burner and no attention is being paid towards providing relief to those areas where series of quakes led to large scale damage; depriving thousands of affected families of relief and rehabilitation they were entitled to. The government had announced only Rs 25 crore as an immediate relief to the people who suffered huge loss in these quakes but even this paltry relief could not reach those severely affected. Those people whose houses got completely damaged are now rebuilding them by spending their hard earned money but haven't received a single penny from government as a relief. "Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced Rs 85 crore for flood affected areas, but only RS 25 crore for quake affected areas of Chenab valley, which is sheer discrimination with us" said a resident. As per the government data, more than 80000 structures got damaged in quakes in Chenab valley in which more than 1000 structures were completely damaged and more than 10000 got severely damaged. "Why is the Chief Minister so oblivious of our sufferings. We have been and are living in miserable condition but thegovernment is not looking towards us," said Sanjay Kumar of Bhaderwah, whose house got damaged in May 1 quake. He is not the only one who suffered a strong set back when his house got partially collapsed and was declared unsafe for living but there are hundreds like him who are still waiting for relief. But the state and central governments have left these people on the mercy of God. Another resident of Doda, Akhter Hussain, whose house also has been declared unsafe said that government must provide some kind of relief to them so that they can rebuild their houses. "We have waited long enough for government relief to come, but now we have no option but to undertake repairs out of whatever little we have" he said expressing anguish. |
