| Sham inspects progress on restoration work of Tawi canal | | | ET REPORT Jammu, 25 Aug: Minister for the PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Sham Lal Sharma today visited the site of breach of Tawi canal at Balole nallah near Purmandal Morh to inspect the pace of progress on the restoration work of this important canal being done by the Ravi Tawi Irrigation Department. Commissioner Secretary, PHE, I&FC, Dr Pawan Kotwal, District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Ajeet Kumar Sahu, Chief Engineer, I&FC, Varinder Badyal, Chief Engineer, Ravi Tawi Irrigation, J C Jerth, SE Hydraulic Jammu, Rajeev Malhotra, SEs, PHE, I&FC, Jammu and Samba and senior engineers and officers accompanied the Minister. This is the 2nd visit of the Minister to the site within a week's time to inspect the pace of progress on restoration. He inspected the syphon and directed the concerned Chief Engineer to complete the restoration work on war footing and also make a comprehensive plan to avoid any such damages in future. He said this Tawi canals is life line for the farmers. He asked the executing agency to complete the work within 15 days. He was informed that restoration work has been taken up at a cost of Rs.119 lakh. He was also informed that following unprecedented flash floods deflection/cracks have emerged at the construction joints of the barrel of the Syphon and the damaged barrel at cracked points will be reconstructed by using Mis- sheet with concrete. Sham expressed concern over the unchecked extraction along the nallah bed and instructed the concerned departments to work in close coordination and cooperate with the task force to protect water bodies as per the guideline and norms. He asked the DDC Jammu to submit a report regarding the encroachments alongwith Balole nallah and take immediate action to remove all the encroachments alongwith Tawi canal and its distributaries. He also asked district administration Jammu and Samba to take stern action against the encroachers and ensure irrigation canals are kept clear for providing irrigation facilities to the farmers at the tail end. Earlier, the Minister, accompanied by the Minister for Housing, Raman Bhalla visited the Bahu Fort to assess the damages to Bahu Fort. The Ministers asked the concerned department to formulate a comprehensive plan for the restoration of this important heritage place on priority basis. He was informed that Rs.22 lakh has been kept with JDA for immediate restoration work and damages and other details are being assessed by the Archaeological Survey of India. |
