Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 29: Police today detained scores of the workers of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) including its senior leader Mohammad Khursheed Aalam after they attempted to march towards DC's office here to present a memorandum against unbearable stench emanating from Achan landfill site.
Scores of PDP workers under the banner of Mohammad Khursheed Aalam assembled at Sher-i-Kashmir Park Srinagar and marched towards city-centre Lal Chowk. Party workers were carrying placards and banners seeking that Achan site should be taken care of as it has become nuisance for the people living there.
Large contingent of police personnel were deployed in and around Press Enclave to foil the march. As the protestors reached Press Enclave, they were detained and taken to police station Khotibagh. Besides Aalam, Police arrested, former trade leader, Muntazir Mohidin, senior party leader Rouf Bhat and Nanaji Watal.
Before his arrest, Khurshid Aalam said that the present government has miserably failed to look into the issue of Achan garbage landfill as the foul and pungent smell emanating from it has now spread to other areas which may become a cause of serious disease in near future.
"People of Srinagar city have lost their faith form the present government as it has miserably failed to shape up the capital city which has bored a shabby look due to government's negligent approach," Aalam said. He said that this was not a political issue but a matter of concern and the government must look into the issue at an earliest.
"It has made life miserable for hundreds of thousands of resident's of old city. The situation has worsened since the temperatures started to soar in the last few weeks with complaints of horrid stench pouring in from Lal Bazaar,Nigeen, Nowshera, Hawal, Zadibal, Nowhatta, Gojwara, Kawdara, and other areas of down town," he said adding, It is like the smell of rotten eggs and raw sewerage, and the stenches so powerful that it becomes difficult for us to go outside or even open windows of our houses.
