| Akhoon's ouster from Council of Ministers costs NC heavily in Kargil | | | ET Report JAMMU, Aug 29: The National Conference has hit the first sign of its dipping popularity. The party has gone down in the recent Ladakh Hill Council Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil. It has won only eight seats time, while in the last elections it was successful in 10 council seats. The Congress, its coalition partner, has improved its tally from the past election. NC which has had a major say in the Kargil district was dipping in popularity. The locals were particularly not happy with the manner in which Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had handled affairs. The locals and especially the NC cadre was annoyed after Qamar Ali Akhoon was removed from the Cabinet. Akhoon had been in the Cabinet before and with his integrity had an enjoyed good will and also kept party afloat. Locals say Omar Abdullah, without having pulse on the political ground, removed him on the advice of his coterie. "Akhoon was the biggest and tallest leader of the party in Kargil and removing him was bound to cost party costly and this is what happened. And more over Omar didn't care much about Kargil," said a NC leader from Kargil. Another reason for the poor performance of NC in Kargil, observers believe is that it also reflect the general mood of despondency against the Omar Abdullah Government which locals allege has failed miserably. The Cong on the other hand has improved its tally in this district where it was considered as a party which given preferential treatment Leh. The party has catered to the interest of the locals and it has strengthened its base. NC also suffered because of the clashes in Zanskar and in other remote areas locals were not interested in voting for it as a result five independent candidates have won. Locals says the winning of independents also reflect that NC can't woo them any more by sheer rhetoric and patronage and voters have matured to elect its candidate in more practical manner. "The result here also give signal how things will move in the next Assembly elections and this not only warning signal for the NC but also shows his poor performance in the five year of Omar Abdullah," said a NC leader from Kargil. |
