| Udhampur stinks for want of garbage dump | | | Sarita Jamwal
UDHAMPUR, Sept 5: After the order of District administration not to dump city waste in Darsu nallah and thereafter their failure to provide new dumping ground to Udhampur Municipality from last fifteen days, the entire Udhampur town is fast turning into a garbage dump as the filth is not being lifted from various locations by the safari karamcharis.
Heaps of garbage can be seen across the town which not only leaves a poor impact on visitors but also causes huge inconvenience to residents. The heaps of garbage on city roads have been emitting foul smell thus making the lives of locals difficult. The garbage is dumped along the road side near Sathia Chowk , Sabzi Mandi , Meat Market Town hall just in front of the local MC office. Ironically, officer of district administration pass the area everyday while going to office but they seem to ignore it.
Earlier the city garbage was dumped near Darsu nallah but after objection of railway department and local residents, the Deputy commissioner banneddumping garbage at the site but no alternate site was identified.
Irked over the menace, the indifference of district administration the residents and different political parties which include BJP, JKNPP and BSP are holding protest and staging dharna against administration demanding early solution of problem.
BJP senior leader Pawan Gupta alleged administration for its utter failure in solving sanitation problem of city. "It is an open invitation to diseases. The situation is worst in the entire 17 wards of Municipality where garbage can be seen lying scattered in streets and heaps of garbage aredumped," he said.
He added that the main reason behind insanitation in the city is non seriousness of administration.
Meanwhile BSP leader Dhanter Singh along with party workers is also sitting on dharma. He has threatened to intensify strike if administration failed to solve the problem. JKNPP party yesterday also locked municipality executive officers office in this regard.
Tehsildar Sapna Kotwal said that administration is identifying a place for garbage dump but keeping in view the factors like preservation of water bodies, suitable place has not been so far found but efforts are on in this regard. She added that in absence of garbage treatment plant we are forced to throw it somewhere. She added that problem would be sorted out shortly.
