Violent protests in Kulgam, Curfew in Shopian Unidentified person buried in DPL, SHRC takes notice of killing | | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Sept 9: Massive protests broke out in Kulgam town on Monday amid complete shutdown. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel had to resort to aerial firing to disperse the protesting youth who pelted stones on their camp and tried to destroy the bunker and the concertina wire erected around it. Eyewitnesses told Early Times that the youth protesting against the Shopian killing pelted stones on the CRPF camp situated in the industrial area of the town. The troopers chased the protesters resulting in the violent clashes for quite some time. The protesters gave a stiff resistance to the police and the latter have to fire several tear-smoke shells to disperse the angry mobs. A Police spokesperson also confirmed that protesters tried to destroy the CRPF bunker situated in the Industrial Area of thisSouth Kashmir town. Pertinently four persons were killed in the firing incident which took place at Gagren in Shopian district when world famous music conductor Zubin Mehta was going on in Srinagar on Saturday. Though police claimed that the slain were militants but the identities of the three revealed so far suggest that they were civilians. The locals said all the slain were unarmed civilians. Three of the deceased were identified as Tawseef Ahmad Bhat, 18, son of Gulam Muhammad Bhat, resident of Baba Mohallah Shopian, Muhammad Yousuf resident of Durpora, Zainpora (a labourer) and Tariq Ahmad Mir son of Ghulam Nabi Mir, a resident of Okay, Kulgam. However, the fourth person who was killed on Saturday, was buried late Sunday evening without any identification, Police sources said that the fourth deceased was yesterday evening buried in Degam Nagbal, area. Degam Nagbal, is a small hamlet near the district police lines situated on the banks of Nalla Rambiara. Sources said that police authorities informed the villagers about the burial of the deceased and the local Auqaf committee arranged a funeral prayer before his unidentified burial. Meanwhile, curfew continues in the Shopian town to prevent people from protesting against the killings. Police sources said that restrictions are there to maintain law and order. Locals said that police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are patrolling the town and confining the habitants to their houses. A complete shutdown is also observed in Pulwama town as well for the third day consecutively to protest against the Shopian killings. Meanwhile the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) today sought report from the Director General of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Shopian on the killing of four persons in a firing incident in the district last week. Taking a suo-moto notice of the matter, SHRC sent the notices to state police chief Ashok Prasad and Deputy Commissioner Shopian Bashir Ahmad Bhat, Secretary SHRC Tariq Banday said. Banday said the SHRC has asked the DGP and DC to submit a detailed factual position of the incident by October 25.The SHRC has also asked people having any information related to the incident to report it to the commission, Banday said. |
