JCC leaders, employees arrested as police foil 'Civil Secretariat' march | Police action leads to disturbance in city centre | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Sept 9: Police foiled the 'Secretariat Chalo' programme of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) of the government employees by arresting hundreds of government employees and lobbing water cannons on the protesting employees. The police action led to disruption of both the pedestrian and traffic movement on the busy Maulana Azad Road. This afternoon thousands of state government employees assembled at Sher-i-Kashmir Park here as part of their programme to march towards Civil Secretariat in support of their demands. The protesting employees raised slogans in favour of their demands and vowed to carry forward their struggle unless the demands are met. Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel had already been deployed in huge number outside the park. They had laid a siege of the park in order to sabotage the march of the government employees towards Civil Secretariat. The JCC had plans to march towards Civil Secretariat and register their protest against the alleged 'apathy' of state government towards their demands. As soon as the government employees came out of the park to start their march the police vehicle used to lob water cannons was pressed into service. This was followed by lobbing of water cannons on protesting employees who were on the main road. Some water cannons were also lobbed on the protesting employees inside the park and there was chaos both inside and outside the park. The police action on the protesting employees led to pandemonium on the Maulana Azad Road and people could be seen running helter-skelter on this occasion. Some of the passersby also came under the impact of water cannons and their clothes were dyed with coloured water. Movement of traffic was seriously affected and it had to be diverted since there was no let up in protests of employees. The protesting employees marched towards the city centre while braving the lobbing of water cannons. Feeling that they would not be able to stop the advancing employees the police and CRPF personnel swooped on them and resorted to baton charge. The hide and seek game played by employees and police personnel carried on for some hours. The advancing employees were stopped by the police at Regal Chowk and scores of them were arrested at this venue. More than 100 employees including the top leaders of JCC were arrested by police and they were lodged in different police stations of the city. Employees and JCC leaders were put behind the bars in Ram Munshi Bagh, Kothi Bagh and Shaheed Gunj police stations. JCC leaders Abdul Qayoom Wani, Farooq Ahmad Trali, Manzoor Ahmad Pampori along with employees were arrested only to be released in the evening. Inside the Civil Secretariat the employees led by President Civil Secretariat Non-Gazetted Employees Union, Rauf Ahmad Bhat carried out a protest demonstration in support of their demands. The employees raised slogans in support of their demands and alleged that state government is backtracking from the agreement signed with the employees two years back. The JCC had called for three day protest programme from today with government employees asked to observe pen down strike on September 10 and 11. The JCC has called for a meeting of the employees at Consumer Affairs Public Distribution (CAPD) department on September 10. JCC is likely to chalk out the future course of action on September 11. |
