| Congress has eyes on stars after Kargil victory | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 17: The formation of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil unit by Congress party is a slow but steady start by the party to achieve bigger goals in upcoming days. The Congress party has been able to go deep inside the territory of its coalition partner, National Conference (NC) and snatch the chair which has remained with NC for years together. The Congress leaders of Jammu and Kashmir have been and are pushing their high command to announce that Congress will go alone for the 2014 Assembly elections as they feel they have the best opportunity to get highest number of seats and form the Government. But the Congress high command seems to have some other interests before J&K Assembly elections. It is the fact that Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in March-April next year and these general elections are coming ahead of the Assembly elections. The NC is in alliance with Congress party at the centre and Congress leaders and high command don't wish to break away with any kind of the alliance before the general elections which will hurt their tally. Getting even a single MP seat for the general elections is very crucial in forming the next Government at the centre and NC can play vital role in improving the tally. Despite that the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) wants to achieve in J&K what they have been waiting since long. The formation of LAHDC Kargil is seen a slight step towards that. It is also the fact that on ground, NC and Congress workers have no sympathy for each other and voice from the ground has been coming that both parties should go alone for the Assembly elections. As on one side the Congress party has its own interests at national level, NC has its interests in the state where it is ruling for past more than four and a half years. Though Omar Abdullah hinted towards a regime change in future when he said that there is no permanency in politics and Government but he also hoped that people of Jammu and Kashmir will support him for the next term as well. His ambitions are not big like other national leaders and Chief Ministers of other states, but he wants to keep the chair in J&K intact. He knows this fact that if Congress takes separation with NC, his ambition of regaining the chair will be minimal. |
