| CDR holds meet of citizens on Kishtwar violence | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 22 : In the backdrop of Kishtwar riots and its fall-out in the Jammu region, concerned citizens met for two days in Jammu on the initiative of the Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation (CDR). The participants were drawn from Kishtwar, Doda, Bhaderwah, Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua as also from Jammu district. The deliberations were focused on ways and means required to be adopted to prevent any recurrence of communal incidents and strengthen the inter-community relations. The participants presented their views about the action plan needed at local levels to address issues and concerns. Those who participated in the deliberations included peace/social activists, academicians, lawyers, industrialists, writers and others. Participants condemned the incidents that happened on August 9 in Kishtwar. It was unanimously agreed that it was important to keep channels of communication open between communities at all times. It was emphasized that all efforts and steps should be taken towards this goal. The participants decided that they will organize themselves into a group called "Citizens Initiative for Peace (CIP)." The group will act at regional as also district and block levels. The conference demanded that the government should take steps to rehabilitate the victims and give long term interest free loans to affected traders and shopkeepers. The administration should take all necessary steps to restore the confidence of the people in affected areas and initiate action against the perpetrators of arson and violence under law. The report of the R C Gandhi Commission should be made public at the earliest, they demanded. |
