| Omar will be in tight spot in 2014 | | Singh expose cannot work | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 22: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah it seems is enjoying every second of the controversy triggered by the latest expose which revealed that Agriculture Minister, Ghulam Hassan Mir received a hefty amount from the Army Intelligence to topple the Omar led government in 2010. Omar and his party expect the expose to do the miracle for them in 2014. But even if the data furnished brought to fore by the expose is accepted for the sake of arguments; Omar will find it very difficult to present himself as a victim during electioneering. Omar has been saying that the 2010 uprising was triggered by the Machil encounter. The encounter, however, took place in March 2010 while as the civilian killings started on January 8 when the CRPF personnel shot dead Inayat Khan, 15, of Dalgate Srinagar. This was followed by killing of four youth identified as Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, 32 Bhat Mohalla, Drangbal, Manzoor Ahmad Sofi Ikhwanpora village of Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, 32 Rainawari, Srinagar January 23-2010 Army . Shockingly for Omar Army was involved in one killing only (that of Mushtaq Ahmad Mir of Rainawari, Srinagar. The other killings were effected by CRPF and Indian Reserve Police Force. The killings evoked widespread condemnation but the agitation did not start. On January 31, the police killed Wamiq Farooq of Chan Mohallah, Rainawari. This proved the turning point. The first phase of the unrest started with this killing. While protests though on a small scale were going on, a BSF party shot dead Zahid Farooq aged 16 years near Nishat on February 5. The agitation gained momentum. Stone pelting also commenced. Tufail Matoo's killing on June 11 added fuel to the fire and the entire Valley came out on roads. The 128th killing took place on December 7. Curiously out of 128 killings the army is involved in seven killings and BSF in two. The police and the CRPF are involved in 119 killings. The argument that the army wanted to topple the government, therefore, does not find much weight unless Omar proves it that his police force is controlled by the army. Omar being the Home Minister (besides Chief Minister) cannot escape responsibility of the killings. In October Omar addressed the Legislative assembly and declared the slain youth as martyrs. He even challenged the totality of accession. He also promised justice to the families of the victims. But challan was filed in Zahid Farooq's case only. The Armed forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) does not apply to the police. Yes, sanction is needed to bring the erring police personnel to justice but the sanction is to be accorded by Omar Abdullah himself in his capacity as Home Minister of the state. Why did Omar fail to accord sanction to prosecute the policemen who killed 119 persons? The people shall ask these questions during electioneering and the miracle he expects from the army expose will not happen. |
