| PCB serves notice to cement plants for violating pollution norms | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT KATHUA, Oct 13: In order to make strict vigil over the violation of Pollution norms by cement factories at Kathua, the District Pollution Control Board (DPCB) has served legal notice to the owners of eight cement plants. The units which have been served notices are being run without having the provision of Pollution Control Devices (PCDs). DPCB said that the identified cement plants are found to violate the PCB norms as the emission levels are on the higher side than the prescribed limits which is adversely affecting the environment of the town. A notice was sent to these industries under section 25/26 and section 21 as per Water Prevention and Control of Pollution Act 1974 and Air Prevention and Control Act. "The violations are detrimental to the environment as emission levels are found on alarming scale than the prescribed limits," the show cause notice reads. "The public hue and cry is mounting as the agriculture/horticulture and even health conditions of inhabitants are badly affected.," it added. PCB has been receiving numerous complaints from the residents of Kathua and adjoining areas, where most of the cement factories have been established that the factory holders are running their units without adopting the preventive measures and also violate the PCB norms frequently, "Even surprise checks of some cement factories reflected that they are violating the norms and creating immense pollution," the notice maintained. |
