| Seismologist opinion on quakes in Doda an eye wash | | `Hydroelectric project reservoirs not reason for quakes' | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 13: The recent remarks of a seismologist team, which toured erstwhile district Doda to ascertain the truth behind regular tremors in the area, likely was a motivated statement as the head of the team, vice chancellor of Kashmir University, Professor Talat Ahmad only talked about hydroelectric projects not being the reason for quakes. He failed to make a strong statement as why regular tremors are being felt in the region. There are many loopholes in the statement of Ahmad, which was aimed at only giving a clean chit to the state government for constructing more and more hydroelectric projects in the area which has been left at the mercy of God after more than 100 tremors have been felt in the region since May 1. The team of geological experts was sent to the area to know the truth behind the tremors but it only came out with a statement that two hydroelectric projects, due to which water reservoirs were created at Dul and Baghliar are not responsible for the tremors. The geological experts of Jammu University had earlier shown an apprehension that the creation of water reservoirs due to power projects could be one of the reasons behind quakes in the region. They had said that water may have entered below the rocks due to which tremors are being felt. This had given the government sleepless nights as the opinion would have forced them to wind up the projects. Thus they sent a team of geological experts, which was headed by government's favourite, VC of Kashmir University to the area with a pre-conceived notion that they have to give clean chit to hydroelectric projects; otherwise government will be in trouble. Sources in the government said that after reaching back from Doda, Talat Ahmad headed towards chief minister's office and gave details of his tour. There are many loopholes in the statement as well as the team of experts as not a single expert from Jammu University was accompanying them to the area. The JU has world's renowned geological experts like G M Bhat, but the government didn't bother to consult him or include him with the team. Rather they brought experts from outside who were given VIP treatment to get a report suitable to the government. |
