| Jammu on terror radar | | Defeating the enemy | | Rustam JAMMU, Oct 14: Panun Kashmir (PK) is a frontline organization of internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus. It has played important role both in and out of India in educating public opinion about the nature of the ongoing secessionist movement in Kashmir and the circumstances which forced the miniscule minority of Kashmiri Hindus, plus 35,000 other non-Muslims, to quit their age-old habitat to become refugees in their own motherland. Besides, it has been from time to time organizing debates and seminars on the issues afflicting the nation with a view to attracting the attention of the authorities to he challenges being faced by the people of the state. On the holy day of Mahanawami and Vijay Dashmi, October 13, the PK organized a seminar on "Jammu on terrorist radar". Those who spoke included former DGP M M Khajuria, former Political Science Professor M K Teng, former Dean of Jammu University's Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Hari Om, Jammu University's Professor of Economic Dipankar Sengupta and chairman of PK Ajay Chrungoo. Addressing the seminar, former top cop Khajuria said thatJammu was very important for Pakistan and it had its eyes fixed on the precious Chenab waters. "It is indeed tragic that even after more than six and a half decades of conflict with Pakistan, successive governments in Delhi and the national political class as a whole had either not bothered to or miserably failed to correctly assess and accurately delineate that country's designs on the territories comprising the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Kashmir Valley was erroneously flagged as topping Pakistan shopping list. The truth was that while Pakistan wanted Kashmir for politico-demographic reasons, the erstwhile Frontier Province -- Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan -- for its strategic location, vast land mass and enormous natural resources, Jammu region is critical for its very survival. The mighty Chenab together with Ravi constituted, what Mohd Ali Jinnah described as the Jugular vein of Pakistan. These rivers fed its canal system that irrigate the Punjab, its food basket, industrial hub and the mainstay of its military prowess and economy. In a significant move Hafiz Sayed was recently drafted to create hype over the 'water aggression' by India, while the then Prime Minister Gillani and the foreign office spokespersons simultaneously emphasized the urgent need to settle the water dispute". Khajuria also reflected on the geopolitics of the region and very rightly opined that "in the post-US withdrawal (from Afghanistan) strategy of Pakistani army and the ISI, Jammu naturally figures prominently on the terrorist radar", and added that "cease Fire violations on the LoC/IB, almost on daily basis, Kathua-Samba Fidayeen assaults, the Kishtwar incident (were) aimed at triggering minority migration prompting communal tension in the region". "Periodic communal tension in Rajouri and attempts to suck Jammu into the separatist game plan foretell the course of events to come. Jammu must, therefore, recognize the threat and rise as one man to defeat these nefarious designs. Communal amity must not only be maintained but further strengthened. It should be realized that the aim of the enemy was to create terror through attacks on citizens -the primary target," was his message to the people of Jammu province. Prof MK Teng, who presided over the seminar and has written extensively on Jammu & Kashmir, on issues of national import and on the pernicious influence of Article 370, said that it would be wrong to describe the religious war unleashed by Pakistan and its agents in Kashmir and elsewhere as cross-border terrorism and warned that things would go out of hand if the people of Jammu and the nation as a whole remained complacent any longer. "Jammu and Kashmir is the tripod on the map of India, destabilising any of the three regions will lead to the dismemberment of the Indian nation as it is the bulwark of the Sanskrit Indian civilisation in the Himalayas. Indian political class do not want to fight the ideological war unleashed by the jihadi forces. What we are witnessing in Jammu and Kashmir is not just terrorism but the religious war based on pan Islamism, which is engaged in demolishing the cultural moorings of the Indian nation. Even the imperialist Britain while ruling over India identified the importance of the Northern Frontier in Jammu and Kashmir and strategised to uphold it but it is unfortunate that the Indian political class seems to be indulged in dismantling the Northern frontiers in Jammu and Kashmir and subjecting the nationalist minorities to the genocide unleashed by the Islamic jihad in the name of separatism." Prof Hari Om said what was done by terrorists and anti-India forces in Kishtwar, Hiranagar, Samba and Rajouri to cause communal riots and disturb peace in the region did not constitute a new phenomenon. He said the "terrorist assault on Jammu started afterPakistan failed to get adequate international support to get endorsement of its anti-India resolution in UNHRC, Geneva, in 1994". "Terrorism in the state has got internal support which could not be eliminated during all these years due to subversive politics practiced from within the state," he said and warned that the "terrorist violence in the state and particularly in the province of Jammu may go up as the commitment of the state government to uphold the integrity and sovereignty of the nation is becoming increasingly suspect". "People of Jammu have a crucial task to defeat subversive machinations and frustrate the terrorist game plan. The Government of India in recent times has encouraged the communal elements in Rajauri, Poonch and Doda who have sympathy for the separatist cause. Interlocutors appointed by the Centre played an ugly role and only encouraged the fissiparous tendencies in Jammu," he also said. (To be concluded) |
