An attendant Sarai at District Hospital Kathua which was constructed about a decade ago and then was inaugurated in year 2010, but it still is non functional reasons better known to authorities concerned. Everyday scores of patients from all over the district as well from neighbouring villages of Punjab visit this hospital, however only a few manage to get lodging facilities while most of the patients have to force to rest in open. Narratying his tale of woes, one Mohammad Asif from Bani, said, "My wife was admitted in the hospital last week for some health ailment and four children are forced to stay with us at hospital as there is no one to take carre off in Bani.' "But it is quite difficult for me to get proper space to feed and make them sleep in absence of due lodging space". He lamented that he came to known that there was a Sarai in the hospital premises, ironically same was non functional despite being inaugurated in 2010. "Due to callous approach of concerned authorities, the Sarai has turned to be 'white elephant' as it not only has turned into shambles but also is looking for its due maintenance, an official seeking anonymity said and further added, "the patients are also deprived of community kitchen facility which was provided by the funding of different Oil corporations.' . Another visitor cum attendant of a patient Raj Kumar from Billawar said that at one hand minister for health has been claiming priority for health sector and government has been working towards bringing modern medical facilities and improving infrastructure in rural areas of the region on the other the thing on ground reality remain different at ground realities. "Earlier 'kitchen facility' was made available where the attendants could use the gas at the charge of 1.50 rupees for 15 minutes but this also turned an 'illusion' to poor visitors- again reasons better known to hospital authorities," he maintained. Medical Superintendent Dr J P Singh when contacted said, "Even though government is doing its job but a lot more is need to be done to provide succor to the patients. However, the Sarai and kitchen facilities are closed due to shortage of required staff. "However hospital management thought of arranging someone on adhoc basis, but the same has been banned by the state government too, he said. At the same time he quickly added the hospital management is mulling to take up the matter in the meeting of Rogi Kalyan Samiti along with other issues so that some basic staff might get arranged through discussions.
