Goni, others join Congress

Srinagar, Oct 14: In a late evening but significant development, around 15 prominent political leaders and former bureaucrats joined Congress and their joining was authorized by the AICC president Sonia Gandhi.
Well placed sources told Early Times late evening that around 15 prominent political personalities and former bureaucrats were consented by Sonia to join Congress. Prominent among them are former MLC and senior PP leader, Murtaza Khan, former Director Information, Farooq Renzu, former MLC, Master Tasaduq Hussain, General Secretary PDP, Thakur Balbir Singh, Aslam Goni of National Conference, Gurbachan Kour, Ghulam Hassan Gilani, Shafiq Mir, Zahida Khan, Bashir Ahmad Shah, Ghulam Hassan Rather, Gulzar Ahmad, Tafazul Hussain, Wali Mohammad and Najeeb Ali Shiekh.
Sources said that Murtaza Khan, Balbir Singh, Farooq Renzu and others had earlier 'wished' to join the party and it was today that Sonia Gandhi accepted their 'wish' with immediate effect.
According to Congress sources, the newly members of the party belonged to many walks of life including political parties.
Partinently, Goni, was political adviser to former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and Renzu was Director Information till recent past.
When contacted, Murtaza Khan confirmed that he and other prominent personalities were accepted in the party fold by the AICC president Sonia Gandhi. "Our joining Congress will certainly change the electoral fortunes in the state particularly in Jammu region," Khan said.
Farooq Renzu also confirmed that he was accepted in the party folder by Sonia Gandhi. "Yes I have joined the Congress party and my membership in the party was accepted by Madam Sonia Gandhi," Renzu told Early Times.
Meanwhile, sources said that Congress high Command also formed a disciplinary committee for Jammu and Kashmir and Gurmik Singh, G N Monga, Narbo Gailong, Vinod Sharma and Anvar Bhat were selected as its members.
In view of the coming Parliamentary and Assembly Elections, Congress also formed an election committee for Jammu and Kashmir with state president Saif-ul-din Soz, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Tara Chand, Shamlal Sharma, M Sharif Niyaz, B A Magray, Sham Paul, Khem Lata Wakhloo, Ravinder Sharma and M Aslam as its members.
The party formed a coordination committee for the state as well which is comprised of Ambika Soni, Saif-ul-din Soz, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Abdul Manan, Tara Chand and Muzafar Parray etc.
