REASI, Oct 23: Speaking at a Diabetes Awareness programme cum detection camp held here today, renowned Diabetologist, National Professor of Diabetes & Chairman National Scientific Committee (RSSDI), Dr Jitendra Singh said, Diabetes is no longer confined to urban areas but is now rapidly spreading to rural, semi-urban and hilly areas where it was hitherto a lesser known disease. The programme was organized by Diabetes Care Foundation (DCF),a registered NGO. Free blood test was done and free medical consultation was provided by a team of specialists led by Dr Jitendra Singh. Free medicine was also distributed. Over 150 persons underwent check-up at the camp. Also present on the occasion were prominent social activists Kabla Singh, Ajay Nanda, Sudesh Pandotra, Sheel Mangotra, Chaman Bhagat, Joginder Singh, Dewan Chand, Balbir Singh, Rajinder Kumar, Naresh Sharma and DCF coordinator Varun Malhotra. Dr Jitendra Singh said that during the current year, the DCF has already successfully organized a series of similar camps in the peripheral areas of Kishtwar, Doda, Udhampur, Kathua and Hiranagar. This is a part of the DCF campaign to reach out to people in remote areas who are usually deprived of easy access to health care facilities, he added. Referring to spurt of Diabetes in rural areas, Dr Jitendra Singh said urbanization of rural areas is a major factor responsible for it. People living in villages and semi-urban areas are also now gradually switching over to dietary habits and life style culture of city folk, he explained. The level of stress has also tremendously gone up in traditionally peaceful rural areas while the level of physical activity has gone down. Dr Jitendra Singh said the DCF will also arrange for future follow-up treatment and investigation of newly detected cases of Diabetes from the rural areas where it holds camps. |
