Jammu, Nov 1: Contrary to the claims of Medical Education Minister to strengthen Medical Services in the State, the Ophthalmology department of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) is functioning with outdated gadgets, and most of them are lying defunct for years.
Well placed sources in hospital informed Early Times that more than 15-20 cataract surgeries were being conducted by the department on daily bases, but despite repeated communication to higher authorities to meet the requirement of department nothing has been done so far.
"Ophthalmology slides machine is out of order for more than 10 years. Due to non-availability of a new machine, the department is dependent on the worn out machine which needs a good amount of money for maintenance every now and then," divulged, an Ophthalmology technician wishing anonymity.
He further said that Green laser which is used for diabetic test, has not been provided to department so far. "The green laser has the following applications in ophthalmology, Retinal and pan-retinal photocoagulation to control the bleeding in the retina and its periphery, used in conjunction with a slit lamp delivery system, Endo photocoagulation in conjunction with an Endo probe in the operating room.
The laser is also used in conjunction with a laser indirect ophthalmoscope for photocoagulation".

Box Story
Owing to shortage of additional space in
Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) to handle any emergency the patients at ward number 8 are facing hardship, as the hospital authorities have allotted 50 beds out of 65 in Ophthalmology ward to patients who have been suffering with dengue.
Showing utter neglect the authorities have forced the patients to wait for their treatment in absence of sufficient beds. Sources informed Early Times that 50 beds in the said wards are lying idle as the rush of Dengue cases had declined for last few days. "15-20 surgeries of cataracts and allied disease are being conducted by the Ophthalmology department, in the shortage of sufficient beds we are un-able to cater the load of patients", said a nurse, wishing anonymity.
