| Productivity hit by strike in Chenani-Nashri Tunnel | | 25 workers arrested in ding dong battle, 3 booked for theft | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 1: Scores of people were injured in a ding dong battle that took place between Udhampur Police and protestors here on National Highway at Chenani. The incident took place when workers in Leighton Company demanded re employment of their nine companions who were ousted by the company on certain pretexts. As per reports a section of workforce engaged in Leighton Welspun's Chenani-Nashri Tunnel Project had gone on flash strike from October 26, demanding that the nine terminated employees should be reinstated. The nine were dismissed as they were instrumental in inciting violence; causing damage to company property and injuries to staff and workers earlier in the year. The matter was taken up according to the due process of Law and the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, gave a clear order on 13 September this year that the decision of management to terminate their services was justified. Subsequent to this, the Tehsildar office and the Divisional Commissioner have also confirmed that the Ministry's order stands. Currently, the case is in the Sessions Court awaiting final disposition and therefore is sub judice. The workers today blocked National Highway at Chenani and started pelting stones on the officers of the company. They also started destroying the property of the company. To maintain law and order,district police intervened which caused ding dong battle between the two. In the ensuing battle,14 police men received injuries. Police also booked 25 workers as preventive measure. Earlier also, police booked three leaders of the workers for stealing 600 liters fuel of company. They have been identified as Arshad Malik,Mashu and one unidentified person. Arshad is also involved in 15 other cases in different police stations in district Ramban and Udhampur. Later the tension was diffused. |
