| Pleas to ministers futile as they remain busy in vote bank politics: Locals | | Transformer suffers snag 4 times in last 7 months | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 4: Since the community transformer suffered damage on October 13 last month, Dawood Colony in Muqam-e-Shahwali village of North Kashmir's Kupwara district has been reeling under complete darkness for last 24 days. Interestingly, the transformer was repaired 4 times in last 7 months. The prevailing darkness due to faulty transformer has added to the miseries of villagers particularly to the students. "More than 20 days have passed since then, there is not any effort by the concerned officials to get the transformer repaired," the locals complained, adding the politicians are presently busy in carrying election rallies and we are suffering here in darkness. They said the transformer suffered some problem last month but the concerned PDD authorities failed to rectify it despite being informed well in time. "By the time PDD officials reacted, the transform was completely damaged," they said. The locals of Dawood Colony, Muqam-e-Shahewali, also accused the Power Development Department (PDD) of being 'indifferent' to their woes. "It has been more than three weeks, there is not even a whisper by the officials which speaks volumes about the lack of concern to our woes," locals added. They also ruled that the transformer installed in their area is not sufficient enough to cater to the power demand of their area due to which transformer went out of order many times in recent past. They informed that they approached the authorities several times and requested them to install a high capacity transformer in the area as the existing transformer gets damaged every now and then. The residents have been demanding installation of fresh transformer in the area to prevent what they said recurring troubles. "We are facing immense hardships in absence of electricity. Our school going children are suffering badly. We are unable to charge our mobile phones while appliances like refrigerators and iron are lying defunct," Showkat Ahmad Hajam, a local resident said, adding this is the season of examinations and students suffer a lot. The locals said that their repeated pleas to the senior functionaries of the PDD to restore electricity at earliest seem to fall on deaf ears. A resident of village alleged: "This damaged transformer is a bonus for the employees of the department as they keep on drawing huge amount in the name of repairs but woes of people remain the same." The people warned the PDD officials of not to take them for a ride and if the situation remains the same in coming days they will have no other option except to protest. The villagers also blamed the local engineers and administration of neglecting the demand installing a high capacity transformer in the area. They said that even MLA and Minister for Law, Mir Saifullah had been apprised of the problem several times but nothing has been done. They have now appealed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to intervene in the matter and direct the PDD authorities to restore the electricity at the earliest. A PDD official wishing anonymity said that it is due to overload that the transformer had suffered snag many times. "We have informed our higher authorities for installing a new one community transformer in the area but they don't pay any heed into it". "The PDD department too is suffering a lot when any transformer in the frontier Kupwara district suffers any problem," the official said, adding we have to send the transformer to Pampore station for repairing. He said the lack of repairing centre in this frontier district of Kupwara causes inconvenience to the local populace. When contacted Superintending Engineer, Bashir Ahamd Khan said he will look into the matter. "I'm shocked that more than 24 days have passed since then; we are at it and are ascertaining the reason of negligence," Khan said. |
