Record number of retired babus to contest LA elections
Raja Ajaz formally jumps into politics

Srinagar, Nov 4: Though retired bureaucrats and senior officers joining the politics ahead of elections is not new in South Asian electoral democracy, however, the number of such bureaucrats joining politics ahead of 2014 elections in Jammu and Kashmir is all time high. And interestingly the number of retired government officials contemplating to participate in electoral fray will be more than those aspiring for birth in Upper House which is really something appreciable.
It will be perhaps for the first time that a good number of retired government officials will be seeking mandate from the public on tickets of all the three major political parties, Congress, PDP and NC. Till recent past there was a trend that the retired officials would join politics only to seek berth in the Legislative Council. At present, three former Chief Secretaries of the State - Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Vijay Bakaya and BR Kundal and three senior officers Naeem Akhtar, Sayed Asgar Ali and Ghulam Qadir Pardesi have assumed the charge of state's lawmakers.
In the 36 member Upper House, Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Vijay Bakaya and Ghulam Qadir Pardesi represent National Conference while B R Kundal represents Congress and Naeem Akhtar and Asgar Ali representing PDP.
Understandably the retiring bureaucrats joining politics find refuge in major political parties and very few are willing to test their luck as independent candidates. As the elections draw closer, more and more retired bureaucrats are weighing to join politics. In recent past Khursheed Alam, Farooq Ahmad Renzu and Showkat Ahmad are the three prominent government servants who joined politics. Among these the brazenness with which all the norms of decency were thrown to wind was Showkat joining National Conference the then DC Ganderbal within 24 of his retirement.
However, former IGP Crime Branch, Raja Ajaz is yet another senior government official who formally announced joining politics without actually choosing any party at the initial stage. Ajaz, a resident of border town, Uri made an announcement to this effect only the other day at a function in Uri. Raja, believed to be popular among people for being helpful to the poor and needy, is emerging potential threat to both NC and Congress in that constituency.
