JAMMU, Nov 4: Many eye brows have been raised over Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's U turn on his controversial statements on Accession.
Although Omar Abdullah today made it clear that he has never challenged Accession of J&K with Indian Union, it is believed that it is result of the tough stand taken by Congress leadership that Chief Minister was forced to dilute his stand on this controversial issue.
Highly placed sources in the Congress said that party leadership has already lodged strong protest against Omar Abdullah's controversial statements on Accession. Congress's arch rival BJP has already make Omar's statement as a national issue, there was a feeling among Congress leadership that it would be difficult for the party to counter's BJP's aggressive campaign so party had brought this matter to the notice of the National Conference leadership.
Omar Abdullah had a number of times raked up the issue of Accession but his statement was never taken seriously by the Congress leadership earlier. It was only during his interaction with the members of the European Union (EU) where he questioned merger of J&K with Indian Union that Congress leadership wake from deep slumber.
"After Omar Abdullah meeting with EU delegation on September 25, 2013, Congress leadership had decided to keep a check on him", insiders in Congress said and added that party high-command too endorsed stand taken by state unit on this issue.
Omar Abdullah while interacting with EU delegation had stated, "While all the States acceded to Union of India and then merged with it, the Jammu and Kashmir only acceded and not merged. That is why we have special status, our own constitution and the State Flag. The political issues of Kashmir are not born with the militancy in 1990 but their genesis is long back associated with the partition of the country when the future of all States was decided other than Jammu and Kashmir".
After Omar Abdullah's controversial statement, it was Congress Minister Sham Lal Sharma who had launched a blistering attack on Chief Minister for creating political uncertainty in the state by giving such irresponsible statement. Sham's bold statement was appreciated by all the nationalist people of the state. Not only once, Sham has given such statement twice to give a message that Congress would not accept such controversial statements.
Sources said that Sham has successfully convinced party leadership both at national and state levels that party would face reaction of such statements in next elections. "It is result of Congress's pressure that Omar Abdullah has taken U turn today", sources said.
