| Threat to democratic processes in J&K | | Time to strengthen security grid | | Rustam
JAMMU, Nov 24: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday warned in clear terms that terrorist groups could try to disrupt the forthcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir and asked the security forces to remain alert so that the evil designs of the forces inimical to democratic processes in the state are defeated. He administered the warning while referring to the "brazen attacks on security forces" in Jammu & Kashmir during his address at the concluding session of the three-day conference of Director Generals of Police in New Delhi. He underlined the need to maintain "increased vigil in view of the resurgence of terrorist groups, particularly Lashkar-e-Toiba and increased infiltration attempts in the state" and said that "There is also a likelihood of attempts to disrupt the forthcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections" and that "the security forces also need to be careful and measured in their response to militant attacks as well as law and order disturbances". Now that the Prime Minister has reflected on the threat to the upcoming electoral exercises in Jammu & Kashmir, it is not only time to maintain increased vigil but also to strength our security grid. Besides, it is also time to order the Army and paramilitary forces to start combing operations across the state to clear it of all the dreaded militants and separatists and put all the Kashmiri separatists, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik and others of their ilk, behind bars on a permanent basis. These out-on-the-limb and frustrated separatists can play mischief, particularly in Kashmir Valley and parts of Jammu province by arousing anti-India passions. Not just this, it is also time to tell those at the helm of affairs in Jammu & Kashmir to behave and not to make any controversial statement. For there are elements in the political establishment in the state who have been creating complications in Jammu & Kashmir by making controversial statements and making common cause with separatists like Geelani and Mirwaiz. One more step needed to be taken: No infiltration from across the international border and the Line of Control. This is a must because the rogue Pakistani army, which rules the roost in Pakistan, can go to any extent to create troubles in Jammu & Kashmir by providing all logistic support to such dreaded terrorist outfits as Lashkar-e-Toiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Hizbul Mujahideen and so on. One can only hope that the authorities in New Delhi would take all the necessary steps to defeat the anti-democratic and anti-national forces. |
